MST3K: Mad Scientist Cocktail

By alcanthro May 17 0

The other day I received my mug from MST3K. I was one of the lucky (or unlucky) ones that received an intact mug. Of course, calling it a mug is debatable, since it has no handle. So the task with which I was faced was to create some kind of drink that does not require a handle. For that, I created the Mad Scientist cocktail, named after the Mad family from the show.

I was trying to think of things which screamed “mad scientist.” Kraken and coconut definitely lend themselves to the theme, and of course there’s absinthe which is has a mystique of insanity surrounding it. Every mad scientist needs his or her cup of Joe, so there’s a shot of espresso to kill two birds with one stone, and for a bit more nuttiness, and sweetness, there’s the amaretto liquor.

  • 4cl coconut rum
  • 4cl Kraken spiced rum
  • 2cl oz absinthe
  • 2cl oz Trader Vic’s chocolate liqueur
  • 2cl amaretto liquor
  • 1 shot of espresso
  • 4cl coconut milk
  • 1 whole egg

Add all ingredients into a shaker and shake well. Fill with ice. Shake until chilled and pour into a tiki glass (or MST3K moon mug). Finish with fresh ice as needed to make the glass look full. I added the raw egg because the coconut milk separated too easily. The egg works to bind the drink together and also make it frothier.

The cocktail has a strong coffee bite to it. You can reduce the amount of espresso if it’s too bitter. The egg can also be left out, if you are feeling squeamish about it, however the drink will not come together quite the same. The drink also has a fair amount of alcohol, so it is best to think of this as two drinks.
